Zamfara State Government has inaugurated a 13-member committee to tackle illegal mining activities across the state.
The Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, inaugurated the committee in Gusau, the state capital.
In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the SSG, Suleman Tudu, the committee is chaired by the Commissioner for Environment, Abdulrahman Tumbido, with membership drawn from security agencies, traditional institutions, and relevant federal and state government agencies.
Malam Nakwada said the initiative was part of the state government’s efforts to support the Federal Government’s drive to formalise the mining sector.
He charged the committee to work closely with security agencies, regulatory bodies and local authorities to identify locations where illegal mining is taking place and profile those involved.
The SSG also tasked the committee with ensuring that licensed mining companies comply with relevant laws and regulations, prevent environmental degradation, and protect the safety and rights of host communities.
In his remarks, the committee’s Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Tumbido, pledged that members would be guided by credible information, respect for the law, fairness, and consideration for the rights and livelihoods of the people.
He added that the committee would work towards promoting lasting security, environmental protection and sustainable development in the state.
