The Kano State House of Assembly has adopted a motion calling on the state government to urgently rehabilitate and upgrade the Wasai Dam to avert its imminent collapse and safeguard lives and property in Gezawa, Minjibir and Ungogo Local Government Areas.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance jointly sponsored by the members representing Gezawa,Warawa and Ungogo Constituencies.

Presenting the motion on behalf of the other sponsors, the member representing Gezawa Constituency, Isiyaku Ali Danja, expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Wasai Dam, warning that severe gully erosion along its eastern embankment poses a serious threat to surrounding communities.

He said the collapse of the dam could devastate several communities, destroy farmlands, damage road networks and disrupt the livelihoods of thousands of residents in Gezawa, Minjibir and Ungogo Local Government Areas.

According to him, communities including Wasai, Adarai and other neighbouring settlements, would be among those worst affected if urgent action is not taken.

The lawmaker noted that beyond the loss of agricultural land and produce, critical roads linking Minjibir, Ungogo and Gezawa could also be washed away, leading to significant economic and social consequences.

He therefore appealed to the Kano State Government to immediately rehabilitate and reinforce the dam to prevent a major disaster.

After careful deliberations, members unanimously adopted the motion and resolved to forward it to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for immediate action to rehabilitate the Wasai Dam and protect vulnerable communities from potential flooding and environmental devastation.
