The European Union (EU) has congratulated Nigeria on the occasion of Democracy Day, describing the democratic journey of Nigeria as one shaped by citizen participation, dialogue, and resilience.

In a message to commemorate the anniversary, the EU ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Gautier Mignot, said democracy extends beyond elections and must be sustained through active civic engagement, accountable institutions, and inclusive governance.

“Democracy is not a single moment. It is a movement. It is a daily duty,” Mignot stated, noting that democratic progress depends on the participation of citizens, peaceful dialogue and a commitment to shared development” he stated.

Mr Mignot said Democracy Day offers an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s transition from military rule and the contributions of millions of citizens who continue to shape the country’s democratic future.

According to the Ambassador, Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve through reforms, public participation, and inclusive governance, with increasing involvement of women, young people, and civil society organizations.

Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting democratic governance in Nigeria through its EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme.

The Ambassador highlighted the EU’s support for women, youths, and persons with disabilities, stressing that democracy becomes stronger when diverse voices are represented in decision-making processes.

He noted that the European Union continues to support independent media organizations, civic information platforms, and fact-checking networks to promote credible information and strengthen democratic discourse.

Mignot added that through its Global Gateway Strategy, the EU would continue to invest in partnerships that expand opportunities, deepen democratic participation, and build long-term resilience.

He emphasized that democracy must be continually protected, strengthened, and renewed through collective effort.
