Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has congratulated Nigerians and the people of the state on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a defining moment in the country’s democratic history.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, the governor said the day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for justice, freedom and the right of citizens to choose their leaders.
Namadi said Democracy Day offers an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, assess progress made over the years and reaffirm the collective responsibility of leaders and citizens in strengthening democratic institutions.
According to him, June 12 symbolizes courage, conviction and the enduring belief that the will of the people must remain the foundation of governance.
The governor paid tribute to the men and women whose sacrifices contributed to the restoration of democracy, noting that democracy goes beyond elections to include strong institutions, the rule of law, protection of citizens’ rights and accountability in governance.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by the nation but expressed confidence in Nigeria’s continued progress through constitutional order, dialogue and the resilience of its people.
Namadi stressed that democratic leadership demands humility, fairness and an unwavering commitment to the public good.
Reflecting on his administration’s performance, the governor said the state government has remained committed to a people-centred approach to governance based on consultation, transparency and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.
He explained that the administration’s 12-point development agenda was designed as a practical roadmap for addressing challenges in key sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, economic development, social protection and environmental sustainability.
The governor said his administration has continued to create opportunities for residents, expand access to quality education and healthcare, transform agriculture, improve infrastructure and strengthen support systems for vulnerable groups across the state.
He noted that peace and stability remain critical to sustainable development and commended traditional rulers, religious leaders, community groups, security agencies and citizens for their contributions to maintaining harmony across Jigawa State.
Namadi urged citizens to uphold democratic values such as tolerance, civic responsibility, respect for differing opinions and active participation in community development, stressing that nation-building requires the collective efforts of all Nigerians.
The governor also reaffirmed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying cooperation among all tiers of government is essential to addressing national challenges and accelerating development.
He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and thanked the people of Jigawa State for their continued support, assuring them that his administration would remain guided by accountability, service and respect for the public trust.
