Former Presidential Candidate, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, says the tight electoral timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, does not provide political parties with adequate time to conduct internal primaries and other democratic processes effectively.
In a press statement made available to journalists, Dr. Hashim noted that the Electoral Act already provides sufficient timelines for political parties to conclude their nomination processes.
Citing Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act, he explained that political parties are expected to submit the names of their candidates not later than 120 days before the election, a provision he said gives parties up to mid-September to complete their primaries and nominations.
According to him, the current timetable is placing unnecessary pressure on political parties to meet the stipulated deadlines.
Dr. Hashim further stated that party primaries require adequate spacing, careful planning, and proper coordination to ensure credible and peaceful outcomes.
