The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria says it has sealed five hundred and ninety eight pharmaceutical premises in Kaduna State over widespread regulatory violations.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Kaduna, National Head of Enforcement of the Council, Dr Suleiman Chiroma, said the enforcement exercise conducted over four days uncovered significant non compliance with national drug distribution guidelines, posing serious risks to public health.

He explained that a total of eight hundred and twenty eight premises were inspected, including one hundred and twenty three pharmacies, six hundred and thirty one patent medicine stores and seventy four unlicensed outlets, out of which five hundred and ninety eight were sealed for various offences.

Dr Chiroma disclosed that sixty eight pharmacies, four hundred and fifty six patent medicine stores and all seventy four unlicensed premises were shut down, while two operators were arrested for gross violations of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Act.

He added that the two arrested individuals are habitual offenders who have consistently violated regulations and will be prosecuted accordingly, noting that making only two arrests out of hundreds of inspected premises reflects compliance of the law by many operators.

The enforcement team, according to him, covered ten local government areas including Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Zaria, Makarfi, Kudan, Igabi, Chikun, Sabon Gari, Giwa and Ikara.

Dr Chiroma noted that only nine per cent of the premises visited were found to be operating illegally, indicating improvement in compliance, while a significant number of operators are law-abiding.

He, however, stressed the dangers of unsafe drug handling and misuse, warning that medicines are not ordinary commodities ;and if not properly used, instead of healing, they can cause serious harm or even death.

Dr Chiroma advised the public to always be vigilant, by demanding to see a valid patent medicine licence and ensure a qualified pharmacist is present before purchasing drugs.

He also cautioned against buying medicines from hawkers, noting that patronising unregulated drug vendors exposes individuals to fake or improperly handled medicines, which can lead to severe health complications, including liver and kidney damage.

The PCN enforcement head emphasised that the council remains committed to eliminating unqualified medicine handlers and substandard storage conditions in order to curb the circulation of substandard and falsified drugs.

He urged media organisations to support public enlightenment efforts, stating that sensitising Nigerians on the dangers of illegal drug sources is critical to safeguarding public health.

Dr Chiroma concluded by commending residents of Kaduna State for their cooperation, saying the support of the public greatly contributed to the success of the enforcement operation.
