Smallholder farmers in Jigawa State have commended the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) Nigeria following the improved performance recorded at a wheat demonstration field under the SAA/Jigawa State Partnership Project.
In a statement by the Communication Officer, Sasakawa Africa Association – Nigeria, Moses Nongoatse, the commendation was made during a Mega Wheat Farmers’ Field Day held on April 1, 2026, in Gilima Community, Taura Local Government Area.
The event brought together farmers, extension agents, government officials, and agricultural stakeholders to assess improved wheat production practices.
A total of 321 participants attended the field day, which provided a platform to address key challenges affecting wheat production, including low yields, climate-related stress, and poor agronomic practices.
Findings from the demonstration plot showed significantly stronger performance compared to traditional farming methods, offering renewed hope for improved productivity.
The improved field recorded better crop establishment, uniformity, and optimal seed rate, demonstrating the benefits of improved seeds, quality inputs, and proper technical guidance.
Key practices showcased included the drilling planting method and precision fertilizer application, focusing on the right type, rate, timing, and placement to boost productivity and resilience.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Taura Local Government Area, Alhaji Shuaibu Hambali, described SAA as a dependable partner in agricultural development in the state.
He noted that the organisation has supported smallholder farmers for over three decades by strengthening extension services and building the capacity of field staff.
The host farmer and leader of the Gilima Wheat Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Alhaji Yaro Gilima, said the demonstration boosted farmers’ confidence in the introduced technologies and improved wheat varieties.
Another farmer, Hajia Bilkisu, said the training helped farmers understand how simple adjustments in planting methods and fertilizer application could significantly increase yields and income.
The field day forms part of ongoing efforts by SAA Nigeria and the Jigawa State Government to enhance productivity, improve livelihoods, and promote climate-smart agriculture, with stakeholders calling for the scaling up of proven solutions to strengthen food security.
