The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has dismissed reports claiming it sought a fresh court order to extend the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement signed by the Head, Media and Public Communication,

Mr. John Okor Odey explains that its appearance in court was strictly in response to an application filed by

El-Rufai on March 6, 2026, seeking to overturn an earlier remand order granted on March 5.

According to the ICPC, the session was not for any new detention request but for the hearing of the former governor’s legal challenge.

Mr. John Okor Odey disclosed that during the proceedings, El-Rufai’s legal team was served with its response to the application.

Counsel to the former governor subsequently requested an adjournment to adequately reply, prompting the Magistrate to reschedule the matter to March 31, 2026.

Providing further clarity, the ICPC outlined that the initial remand order allowed it to detain El-Rufai for 14 days over allegations bordering on money laundering and abuse of office. Upon expiration, the court granted an additional 14-day extension on March 5 to enable the Commission to conclude its investigations.

The ICPC emphasized that El-Rufai remains in lawful custody under a valid court order and that all actions taken are in strict compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

The Commission also reiterated its commitment to professionalism and due process, urging the public to disregard unverified reports and rely solely on official updates.
