The Kaduna State Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure has today commenced a three-day training programme on sustainable community Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) promotion in Zaria, in collaboration with the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme.

Declaring the training open, the Director of Water Supply, Engr. Usman Ibrahim, who represented the Commissioner of Public Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Ibrahim Hamza, said the objective of the programme is to position Kaduna State to excel in SURWASH activities.

He noted that Kaduna is among the first tier of seven states participating in the SURWASH programme, stressing that the ministry is committed to strengthening institutional capacity, improving coordination mechanisms, and enhancing partnership approaches to ensure the state stands out in implementation and service delivery.

Among the resource persons at the training is Hassan Ahmed, who is delivering sessions on project coordination mechanisms.

He described coordination as structured processes, tools and systems put in place to ensure effective project implementation, emphasizing that clearly defined roles and responsibilities- guided by the RACI matrix (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed)- are critical to project success.

Also facilitating at the programme is Engr. Sani Dauda Ahmed, who is speaking on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in WASH delivery.

He highlighted PPP as a strategic approach that leverages private sector expertise and investment to complement government efforts, while underscoring the need for transparency, accountability and strong regulatory frameworks to ensure sustainability.

The three-day training will also cover key water resources management functions and partnership approaches.

Participants drawn from various departments and units of the ministry, as well as other relevant ministries and agencies, are expected to apply the knowledge gained to improve performance and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of sustainable WASH services across Kaduna State.
