The Gambian Prison Service has commended the Nigerian Correctional Service for its support in training Gambian officers on both custodial and non-custodial correctional measures, aimed at effective rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society.
The Director-General of the Gambian Prison Service, Mr. Asumana Manney gave the commendation during the Passing-Out Parade and Graduation Ceremony of the Assistant Superintendent of Corrections, ASC Basic Course (International), held at the Nigerian Correctional Service Staff College, Barnawa, Kaduna.
He noted that The Gambia is in the process of transitioning from a prison system to a modern correctional service, making it necessary for its officers to undergo professional training in Nigeria to gain firsthand experience on best correctional practices.
According to him, the initial training programme accommodated only five Gambian officers.
However, following an appeal to the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service for increased participation, the number was expanded to ten officers, who have now successfully completed the course.
He expressed appreciation to the Nigerian authorities for granting the request and reaffirmed his agency’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with Nigeria, particularly in the area of penal and correctional training, to enhance effective service delivery.
In his remarks, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, expressed satisfaction with the performance, discipline, and commitment of the graduating international cadet officers.

He urged the graduates to apply the knowledge, skills, and values acquired during the training in the discharge of their duties, while also serving as good ambassadors of their respective countries.
The ceremony marked another milestone in regional cooperation aimed at strengthening correctional systems across West Africa.
