The UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, has commended Gombe State Government for it’s financial support and commitment to eradication of Neglected Tropical Diseases in the state.
The UNICEF’S Chief of Field Office in Bauchi, Dr Nuzhat Rafique stated this in Gombe during a media dialogue on Neglected Tropical Diseases.
She said the progress made by the state was encouraging while urging for continues investment to protect children and women.
Dr Nuzhat Rafique maintained that Gombe State was close to reaching the transmission breakpoint for some NTD’s-a point where the disease can no longer spread easily.
She also stressed the need for journalists to continue raising awareness on the health risks associated with NTD’s and how to take preventive measures to tackle it’s spread.
In a remark the Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, Gombe State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, said all local government areas except Akko and Kwami are now free of NTDs.
He attributed the success to hardworking of health workers, strong support from partners and community involvement.
UNICEF’s National NTD Consultant, Mr Hilary Adie, said the disabilities caused by NTDs place a heavy burden on countries and prevent many people from reaching their full potential.
He noted that the need for the involvement of more trained health workers to help with treatment, monitoring,and community education.
He added that improving sanitation, such as access to clean water, toilets,and proper waste disposal, will also help stop these diseases from returning.
