Wavemakers Initiative for Health and Youth Empowerment WIHYE has organized a four-day capacity-building workshop for journalists, media practitioners, community members, and other stakeholders on human rights and diverse values in Kaduna.

The workshop aims to promote inclusion, reduce discrimination, and strengthen human rights reporting in the media.

Speaking at the training, the Executive Director of Wavemakers Initiative, Mr. Kenneth Nduka, said the workshop is part of efforts to deepen understanding and encourage collaboration among key stakeholders toward advancing the rights of all persons, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

Mr. Nduka described the four-day engagement as impactful, noting that participants explored practical ways of fostering respect and dignity for every individual through constructive media representation and community dialogue.

He added that WIHYE has continued to work closely with relevant bodies, including law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations, to strengthen partnerships that promote equality and justice in society.

In his address, the State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, Kaduna Office, Dr. Terngu Gwar said the Commission is deeply concerned about the increasing cases of harassment, intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and denial of access to health and economic opportunities faced by sexual minorities.

Dr. Gwar stressed that every person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserves protection under the law and should be treated with dignity and respect.

He emphasized the critical role of journalists and media practitioners in shaping public opinion and called on them to adopt a human rights–based approach when reporting issues concerning sexual minorities.

“Media practitioners must frame their stories from a human rights perspective by doing so, we can help reduce stigma, promote understanding, and create an enabling environment where everyone can live freely and fulfill their potential.

The four-day training which focused on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics, SOGIESC featured discussions, group sessions, and practical exercises on ethical reporting, non-discrimination, and rights-based advocacy.

Participants expressed appreciation to WIHYE and the National Human Rights Commission for enhancing their knowledge on inclusive reporting and pledged to apply the lessons in their work to promote equality and human dignity.
