The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening institutional capacity and promoting digital and technological investment for women and girls as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, made this known in his keynote address at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Centre for Gender Studies (CGS), Bayero University Kano (BUK), held at the CBN Centre of Excellence.
Ambassador Tuggar noted that the government has achieved significant milestones through the inclusion of women in peacebuilding processes, stressing that Nigeria’s foreign policy continues to prioritize women’s participation and equitable international partnerships.
“Women are agents of change who have contributed immensely to providing holistic solutions to human conflict,” Tuggar stated.
He commended the Centre for Gender Studies for its research contributions in Northern Nigeria and its impact on shaping public discourse around gender and identity.
In his remarks, Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Haruna Musa, said BUK has been recognized as one of the leading Centres for Gender Studies in Nigeria for its commitment to women’s advancement and for addressing structural barriers to gender equality.
He disclosed that the university has developed a comprehensive Gender Policy and Sexual Harassment Policy, both of which have been commended by the World Bank as model frameworks for higher institutions in Africa.
Earlier, the Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, Ambassador Safiya Ahmad Nuhu, highlighted the Center’s achievements, including the establishment of a state-of-the-art confidential counseling corner, extensive mentorship programs, and educational initiatives that promote gender equality and youth empowerment.
She added that the Center continues to collaborate with local and international partners to expand its research and advocacy efforts.
“Our doors remain open to all organizations willing to collaborate in driving women’s empowerment, education, and sustainable development,” Ambassador Nuhu said.
The event also featured special recognition for Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo, wife of former Vice President Namadi Sambo, alongside former Directors of the Center and long-serving staff members who received awards for their contributions.
