The Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to transform Nigeria’s communication sector for greater economic growth and digital advancement.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Senator Aliyu Ikra Bilbis, gave the assurance during the screening of five presidential nominees for confirmation as Chairman and members of the Commission.
Senator Bilbis explained that President Tinubu’s request for the Senate’s confirmation of the nominees was in accordance with the provisions of the Act establishing the NCC.
In the course of the screening, the committee magnanimously allowed one of the nominees, a former senator, to take a bow and go, while others were questioned and assessed with fairness to ensure a speedy and transparent confirmation process.
Senator Bilbis congratulated President Tinubu for making what he described as a “right choice” of nominees capable of driving reforms and ensuring effective implementation of policies that would further strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Responding to questions, the nominee for Chairman, Mr. Idris Olurumbe, pledged that the team would work collectively to address challenges such as inadequate broadband penetration and limited ICT access in rural areas.
He assured that, if confirmed, the board would collaborate closely with service providers to enhance digital services and ensure Nigerians receive value for their money in telecommunications and data services.
Mr. Olurumbe also emphasized the importance of enforcing existing laws enacted by the National Assembly to promote accountability and improve service delivery within the sector.
He further appealed to the Senate for continued legislative support to enable the Commission perform its statutory functions efficiently and contribute to sustainable development across Nigeria’s digital economy.
