The Imo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the education sector and expanding access to quality learning opportunities for youths across the state.
This assurance was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s media aide, Hussaini Bukar, following the presentation of a certificate of recognition by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to the newly established University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omumma, Imo State.
Governor Hope Uzodinma said the new university will focus on digital skills, innovation, science, and technology to properly equip Imo youths with the knowledge and creativity needed to drive economic growth.
He explained that establishing more universities would ease the struggle many young people face in seeking tertiary education, adding that the new institution will partner with Imo Digital City and the University of California, Berkeley, to design a practical and entrepreneurial curriculum.
The Governor emphasized that graduates of the institution will emerge as employers and innovators, as its programs are designed to promote entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
Speaking during the recognition ceremony, NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, described the development as a milestone in Imo State’s commitment to expanding educational access and maintaining academic excellence.
He urged the state government and the university management to ensure that the institution meets global standards, cautioning that it must not merely add to the number of universities in the state but become a true center of excellence.
Professor Ribadu also disclosed that Imo State now has a total of eight universities following the recognition of the new institution.
He said the NUC has informed TETFUND, JAMB, NYSC, and NELFUND about the new university and would inspect its facilities and staffing before admission begins.
The Executive Secretary encouraged Governor Uzodinma to expedite necessary preparations ahead of the upcoming admission season in November, assuring that the NUC will continue to guide and mentor the institution toward full operation.
