The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has recovered 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 112 kilograms following a road traffic collision on the Zaria – Kano Road near Gadar Tamburawa.
The Public Relations Officer Kano NDLEA, Sadik Muhammad Maigatari confirmed the incident to Newsmen in Kano.
According to him, the incident occurred when a Volkswagen Golf collided with a truck.
He explained that, NDLEA patrol officers on duty heard the crash and quickly rushed to the scene to render first aid and carry out rescues.
According to the Command, officers had to remove the windscreen and a window of the Golf to evacuate the driver, while the passenger was pulled out after forcing open the other door.
“The passenger attempted to flee but was immediately apprehended”.
Sadik pointed out that a search of the vehicle uncovered 150 blocks and three sacks of loose cannabis, with a total weight of 112kg.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver, who is receiving medical treatment, admitted to working as a representative of the consignor and had previously made similar deliveries within and outside Kano.”
The public relations officer hinted that the suspect also confessed to using a one-way route to evade NDLEA checkpoints while entering the city.
The NDLEA confirmed that the case involves two offenses: one-way driving leading to a collision and trafficking in narcotics.
According to the statement, the Kano State Commander, ACGN A.I. Ahmad, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to vigorously pursue and prosecute offenders involved in drug trafficking.
He urged members of the public to desist from such criminal activities and to report suspicious drug movements to the NDLEA.
The Command commended the courage and professionalism of the patrol officers involved in the rescue and seizure, attributing their effectiveness to the leadership of NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) whose strategic guidance has strengthened the agency’s operational capacity.
