Kano State Government has announced the deployment of 9,680 volunteers to support the ongoing online pre-voter registration exercise across 484 wards in the state’s 44 local government areas.
The resolution followed a meeting between the State Mobilisation Taskforce on Voter Registration and local government Chairman held at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Kano.
According to the plan, at least 20 volunteers with Android devices will be assigned to each ward, depending on the number of polling units.
The volunteers, drawn from local communities and including women, will be trained on the online registration process before deployment.
Chairman of the Taskforce and Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the move followed low participation figures from earlier registration drives despite Kano’s status as Nigeria’s most populous state.
“This is a wake-up call,” Waiya said, urging council Chairman to step up sensitization efforts in their communities.
He assured that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is committed to providing the required logistical support.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Tajo Othman Zaura, urged local government leaders to treat the exercise as a civic duty beyond party politics.
Chairman of Nasarawa Local Government and ALGON Vice Chairperson, Alhaji Yusuf Imam Ogan Boye, pledged the collective commitment of council leaders to the programme.
Later, the Taskforce met with 484 councillors at the Coronation Hall, Government House, where Waiya sought their cooperation.
The Chairman of the Councillors’ Forum, Alhaji Bashir Achika, described the exercise as significant in the electoral process and pledged councillors’ support.
