Federal Government has been advised to focus on food security as a strategy to address the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
A financial expert, Professor Yusha’u Ibrahim Ango, gave the advice in an interview in Kaduna while reacting to reports of ten billion dollars spent on food imports, which he described as unfortunate.
Professor Ango warned that such huge imports would weaken the nation’s foreign reserves, worsen unemployment, and contribute to building foreign economies instead of strengthening Nigeria’s own.
He stressed the need for subsidized inputs and agricultural extension services to improve agricultural production to justify democratic governance.
Professor Yusha’u Ango also criticised plan by the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission to increase salaries of political leaders while neglecting workers and pensioners despite their contributions to socio-economic development.
