Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, alongside other committee members

House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has unveiled a summarized compendium of 86 bills, seeking public input ahead of proposed public hearings across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

Chairman of the Constitution Review committee and the Deputy Speaker Mr Benjamin Kalu, led members of the committee to perform the function at the House of Representatives Press Centre Abuja.

Mr Benjamin Kalu, explained that the compendium has been categorized into 13 thematic areas, including Electoral Reforms, Judicial Reforms, Legislature, Inclusive Governance, Security and Policing, Devolution of Powers and Strengthening of Institutions.

Other areas to be considered during the hearing are Traditional Institutions, Fiscal Reforms, Citizenship and Indigeneship, Fundamental Human Rights, Local Government Reform and Creation of States & Local Governments.

He said the session was designed to provides a comprehensive overview of the proposed amendments, including explanatory memoranda, long titles, and detailed expositions of each bill.

Mr Kalu, maintained that the zonal public hearings has been a great opportunity for stakeholders and other members of the public to scrutinize the bills, seek clarifications and provide constructive inputs for proper consideration by the committee.

The committee Chairman also confirmed that other stakeholders expected at the public hearing include civil society organizations, professional bodies, traditional institutions, and other interest groups to express their views and contribute meaningfully to
the constitutional reform process.

The Deputy Speaker who encouraged the members of the public to download the compendium, review the proposed bills, and provide feedback to inform the legislative process assured that their contributions and inputs would be considered crucial to the success of the constitutional review process.
