Jigawa State Government has launched a major agricultural and nutrition-focused initiative with the official rollout of biofortified millet and maize seeds aimed at tackling malnutrition and enhancing climate-resilient farming.
Governor Malam Umar Namadi unveiled the programme in Dutse as part of his administration’s broader agricultural transformation agenda.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Namadi described the distribution of the biofortified seeds as both an agricultural and health-driven intervention.
He emphasized the seeds’ ability to improve environmental sustainability and public health outcomes, particularly in rural communities.
“Under the initiative, 30,000 smallholder farmers across the state will receive the improved seed varieties. These crops, enriched with vital nutrients like iron, zinc, and vitamin A, are specifically chosen for their adaptability and nutritional benefits.
“This is a direct step toward ensuring food and nutrition security in every household,” the governor said. “It also represents a strategic response to the dual challenges of climate change and malnutrition.”
The programme is supported by HarvestPlus and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), in collaboration with federal and state institutions.
Farmers and extension workers will receive training to ensure successful cultivation and long-term adoption of the improved seed varieties.
Governor Namadi also highlighted complementary efforts underway, including the recruitment of 1,435 extension workers, input financing for over 40,000 rice and wheat farmers, and the establishment of the Jigawa Farm Mechanization Service Company.
Sixty Farm Service Centers are being set up, and a Ministry of Livestock is in the pipeline to further boost productivity.
HarvestPlus Nigeria Country Manager, Yusuf Dollar Fu’ad, praised the state’s proactive approach, noting that climate change continues to erode crop nutrition, making initiatives like this essential for public health and food resilience.
The launch reinforces Jigawa’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development, with long-term goals of improving nutrition, strengthening food systems, and positioning the state as a leader in climate-smart agriculture.
