The Jigawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) says it has constituted a Veterans Committee and a Welfare Committee as part of efforts to deepen institutional support and professional solidarity among members of the union.
In a statement, the Council Secretary, Comrade Aisha Abba Ahmed, explained that the establishment of the committees aims to foster better engagement with retired journalists and enhance the welfare of practicing members in the state.
She stated that the Veterans Committee is tasked with maintaining strong ties with retired and elderly members of the union, as well as documenting and preserving the contributions of veteran journalists in the state.
According to her, the committees also have the mandate of organizing mentorship and knowledge-sharing initiatives between veteran and younger journalists, in addition to advising the council on ways to honor and integrate veterans into union programs.
Aisha Abba Ahmed stated that members of the Veterans Committee include Mati Ali as Chairman, Habibu Nuhu Kila, Fahad Muhammad, and Salmanu Adamu as members, while Muhammad Hussaini Kwalam will serve as Secretary.
She further explained that the Welfare Committee is tasked with assessing and addressing the welfare needs of members across the state, and proposing support mechanisms for journalists facing health, financial, or emergency challenges.
Aisha added that the committee will also coordinate with media organizations and stakeholders on implementing welfare policies, as well as recommend sustainable welfare schemes for union members.
