Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for revitalizing the Forest Guard Initiative as part of his Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the move as a bold step in tackling Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr. Isaac Abrak, the group noted that the initiative addresses the threat posed by violent groups using forested regions as hideouts, which has led to widespread loss of lives and property across the country.

NCYP commended the President for staying true to his campaign promises and responding to the repeated calls from the organization and other concerned Nigerians.

The group emphasized that the revitalization of the Forest Guard is central to their campaign efforts across the Northern region.

The statement also urged communities, particularly those most vulnerable to insecurity, to support the initiative, highlighting that the recruitment of local youth into community-based security outfits is key to protecting forests and ensuring safety at the grassroots level.

“This achievement vindicates our decision to campaign vigorously for President Tinubu. To God be the glory,” the statement read.

The NCYP further called on the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Environment to ensure that recruitment into the Forest Guard is inclusive and based on integrity.

The group advocated for individuals living in and around Nigeria’s 1,129 forest areas to be prioritized in the recruitment process, arguing that their familiarity with the terrain offers a strategic advantage in combating criminal activities.

The organization stressed that the success of the initiative will depend on a transparent and depoliticized recruitment process.

They warned against turning the Forest Guard into an avenue for political patronage or enlisting individuals with questionable backgrounds.

It urged that community leaders and security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), should be involved in vetting prospective recruits, adding that only Nigerians with a genuine commitment to protecting their communities should be enlisted.

“We reiterate that at inception, the Forest Guard can recruit and employ a total of 185,000 youths—5,000 from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” Mr. Abrak stated.

He described the Forest Guard as possibly the last viable line of defense in combating terrorism and banditry in both the North and South, emphasizing that its integrity and effectiveness must not be compromised.

He emphasized that recruits must be trained with values of patriotism, discipline, citizenship, and the vision of “One Nigeria” as laid out by the nation’s founding fathers.

The group expressed willingness to collaborate in community sensitization, monitoring, and providing local insights to ensure the success of the initiative.

NCYP believes the revitalized Forest Guard can become a cornerstone in securing Nigeria’s forests and protecting its citizens.
