The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has called on corps members across the country to utilize social media platforms responsibly and contribute meaningfully to national development.

He stated this while addressing the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream I corps members at the temporary orientation camp in Gusau the Zamfara state Capital.

Brigadier General Nafiu also advised corps members to avoid chasing fleeting moments of social media fame and instead focus on creating meaningful and impactful content.

“Let me talk to you about the use of social media, it’s something that is trending. All of you have smartphones, you all have data, and you all operate one handle or another. But I urge you to avoid chasing fleeting moments of fame,”

He explained that, a short two- or three-minute video clip might go viral and attract hundreds of thousands or even millions of viewers or followers without substance, or productive value, saying that, such fame quickly fades.

Brigadier-General Nafiu also encouraged the corps members to use the appropriate channels to report any issues or concerns they may have during their service year, rather than resorting to public complaints online.

“If something is not going well, ask questions through the channels that have been established. There are proper systems in place to address your grievances,”

“Social media is a powerful tool in your hands. Use it wisely to share positive stories, promote our cultural heritage, and engage in constructive dialogue that will move Nigeria forward,”

He also encouraged the corps members to take their service year seriously by actively participating in community development projects and skill acquisition programs facilitated by the NYSC.

Brigadier General Nafiu also highlighted the importance of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, emphasized the need for them to fully engage by learning at least one skills with a view to become self reliance after service.

He reiterated the scheme’s commitment to building a generation of responsible and self-reliant youth.

The Director General further assured the Corps member that they would only be posted posted to safe communities in the state particularly where they have done adequate security assessment.

The Director General commended the vital role of the scheme in building bridges across religious, tribal, and ethnic divides.

He attributed the establishment of the scheme to the vision of General Yakubu Gowon, adding that it fosters unity and nurtures the spirit of One Nigeria.

Earlier, Zamfara State Coordinator of NYSC, Malam Lawan Ahmad said a total of 611 core members made up of 414 male and 196 women female were registered for the orientation exercise.

Malam Ahmad explained that, the core members have quickly adapted to the new environment and are responding positively to all calm activities and the instructions.

He also informed the DG that, in line with his policy trust, they have maintained active engagement with all relevant stakeholders to ensuring the enhanced security and welfare of core members in the state.

“Only recently his excellency the executive governor of Zamfara
State Dr Dauda lawan in response to our continued advocacy approved the upward review and immediate payment of state allowances to core members as well as special packages for medical personnel in Zamfara state”
