A Civil Society Organization in Kaduna, known as Tax Justice and Governance Platform has identified several critical gender-based disparities in tax policies and administration affecting women and urged the state government to address the issue.
Coordinator of the organization Mr. Simeon Olatunde stated this at a news Briefing and presentation of Handbook on Gender Analysis of Tax Policies in Kaduna State Informal Sector.
He said the research observed that women face more Financial Constraints and Tax Burden with equivalent expenses leaving them a minimal income which affects taxation and business expansion.
Mr. Olatunde said the research reveals many more systemic issues that disproportionately affect female entrepreneurs and small-scale business owners, necessitating urgent reforms from government.
“A fair and inclusive tax system is essential for sustainable economic development and gender equity. This handbook serves as a policy blueprint for improving tax fairness in Kaduna State’s informal sector. We urge government agencies, tax authorities, civil society organizations, and the media to collaborate in advocating for these reforms”.
In their contributions, the Lead Researcher Mallam Sadiq Mustapha and a second Researcher, Rahmon Agboola suggest solutions to the issues which includes Gender-Responsive tax enforcement, Simplifying Tax Processes & Strengthening Education among others.
“We invite policymakers to engage with this research and take decisive action to address the systemic challenges faced by women in taxation. Together, we can build a more equitable tax environment that empowers all business owners and fosters economic justice.”
The research indicates that Despite their economic contributions, women in the informal sector face unique challenges in tax compliance, enforcement, and access to incentives.
