The Commander of 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army Gusau, Brigadier General Opurum Timothy, has assured residents of Zamfara State and beyond of the Nigerian Army’s determination to continue working tirelessly to ensure peace and stability.
He stated this while Speaking with newsmen at the end of the Nigerian Army’s West African Social Activities WASA 2024 event held at the 1 Brigade Cantonment in Gusau.
The West African Social Activities WASA is an annual event organized by the Nigerian Army to celebrate the diverse rich cultural heritage of this great country.
The annual event brings together Officers, Soldiers, and their families in a relaxed atmosphere to celebrate and mark the end of the year’s activities.
General Opurum who reaffirmed the military’s commitment to eradicating banditry and restoring peace in Zamfara and the Northwest region in General, called on troops to remain steadfast in their mission, emphasizing that, their commitment and sacrifice are essential to achieving lasting peace.
According to him, the notorious bandit leader Bello is currently on the run due to the ongoing military operations in Zamfara State.
“Bello Turji is a coward and has abandoned his foot soldiers due to the pressure we have mounted on him. We have cleared many of them and will sustain the momentum by taking the fight directly to their strongholds,”
The Brigade Commander who was known by his nickname “Jar Kunama” sting of the scorpion, commended the people of Zamfara for their Cooperation, particularly through the provision of vital intelligence, which has led to remarkable successes.
Ealier, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, represented by the state Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs Meriga commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their hardwork to bring lasting peace across Zamfara State.
This year’s WASA event in Gusau was attended by top dignitaries, including traditional rulers, leaders of other security agencies like the Nigerian Air Force and paramilitary agencies among others.
Highlights of the event were the tour of Units and Garrison stands, Cultural display and Dance, taekwondo display, tug of war, and lighting of the born fire by the Brigade Commander among others
While Several other lucky winners went home with various gifts ranging from vegetable oil, rice among other gifts.
