Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday represented President Bola Tinubu as the special guest of honour at the National Arcade in Abuja, marking the climax of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration and parade.
The annual event, organised by the Ministry of Defence, honours Nigeria’s fallen heroes who sacrificed during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, global peace support missions, and various internal security operations.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is commemorated annually on January 15, marking the end of the Nigerian Civil War on the same date in 1970. Previously, the event was observed on November 11, aligning with other Commonwealth nations’ Remembrance Day.
Vice President Shettima, accompanied by the Commander of the Guards Brigade, stood in for President Tinubu, who is attending the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2025) in the United Arab Emirates.
Dignitaries at the Remembrance Day ceremony included Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, service chiefs, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume. Other attendees were Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu (representing Speaker Tajudeen Abbas), Chief of Staff to the President Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru, and members of the diplomatic corps.
