Kano State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, has identified the inadequacy of trained teachers as a major catalyst for deficiency in quality of education.

A permanent member at the board, Rabi’u Sale disclosed this in a remark during a round table session on teacher recruitment and deployment, organized by Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria, PLANE, held in Kano.

According to him, the quality of educational delivery across the state is seriously deficient due to several factors, including low commitment from teachers.

He said other factors affecting the quality of education in the state include low quality of teachers, inadequacy of female teachers in rural areas as well as shortage of teaching and learning materials.

“We are all aware that educational issues have become a very important and crucial aspect of human development and every responsible government worldwide today has earmarked it as a key issue that needs serious attention, especially Access, equity and quality.

The permanent member stressed that the government has taken huge steps towards tackling the problems.

In her presentation, Director Personnel SUBEB, Mariya Hodi Adamu, pointed out that Board had implemented several strategies to address the challenges to teacher recruitment, aimed at ensuring quality education at the basic level.

She explained that to increase recruitment drives, SUBEB had launched targeted recruitment campaigns to attract more qualified teachers, particularly focusing on filling the gaps in rural areas.

The director stressed that the board also enhanced training and programs, and improved incentives and benefits to make teaching profession more attractive.

Mariya Hodi Adamu explained that this was in addition to improving salary structure, and other benefits to teachers especially those willing to work in rural areas.

“The Board has also invested in improving schools infrastructure making schools more conducive to teaching and learning, as well as Community involvement through engaging local communities to support teacher recruitment and retention”

The State Team Lead Partnership for Learning for All (PLANE) Umar Lawan said the program was organized to foster collaborative dialogue between education stakeholders and media professionals for improved coverage and awareness creation on education initiatives, challenges and ongoing reforms in the state.

The event was marked by breakout sessions and the development of a collaborative strategy for teacher implementation.
