House of Representatives has expressed concern over a report of 16.9 million housing deficit in the country.

Deputy Speaker of the House Mr Benjamin Kalu, made the expression in his message to the 17th Africa International Conference on Housing taking place in Abuja.

Mr Benjamin Kalu who described the statistics as worrisome called for collective effort from stakeholders in the housing sector to fix the inherent challenges of the massive deficit.

The Deputy Speaker said the report placed Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, and Abuja as cities with 20 percent rise in housing needs yearly, while confirming that the 10th House is willing to work with stakeholders to meet the people’s housing needs.

He attributed the housing deficit in
Nigeria to rapid urbanization, population growth, and a lack of affordable housing finance, stressing that the 10th house still had a duty of enacting impactful legislations that can change the narration.

The Deputy Speaker also expressed dissatisfaction with the nation’s mortgage system which he said had apparently made it difficult for the common man to own a house.
