Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi

The Kano State coordinator NHRC, Alhaji Shehu Abdullahi, made the disclosure during an exclusive interview, with Radio Nigeria in Kano.

According to him, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Headquarters had put modalities in place to ascertain the degree of damages and loss of lives, to take the next line of action.

The State Co-ordinator maintained that, the commission had received complaints on election violence, human rights violations, where people were disenfranchised from voting, non availability and late arrival of voting materials, among others.

Shehu Abdullahi stressed that there were reports of alleged violence in Doguwa, Tudun Wada, Rogo, Trarauni, Karaye, and Gwarzo Local Government Areas.

There were issues of maiming and inflicting previous hurt to victims of election violence”

He described corruption as another major thematic area, during the last election, which leads to vote buying through cash, food and clothing materials.

We can see that from the presidential and governorship elections there were a lot of issues on human rights violations in some parts of the state”

The State Co-ordinator highlighted that, there was a reduction in the number of cases received by NHRC in kano, as only 258 cases were recorded from January 2023 to
date.

“In January 2023 we recorded 168, February 58 and march 35 cases in Kano”

Shehu Abdullahi attributed the decline, to factors such as the new monetary policy and election, saying that, unavailability of cash hinders people from expressing their grievances to the commission.

He identified, poverty and economic hardship as major catalysts to abandonment of family responsibilities .

The State Co-ordinator stressed that, out of the total number of cases received, 211 were concluded while 43 are on going, with regards to rights of the child, domestic violence, rape, abandonment of family responsibilities, labour matters and all other thematic areas treated by NHRC.
