Senate Reaffirms Commitment In Strengthening INEC

Senate has reaffirmed it’s position in helping the electoral body, INEC to achieve success in it’s efforts to improving the Electoral process.

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan gave the assurance while welcoming and congratulating the Government of Nigeria, Ruling party for the success in the election, the electorates for the peaceful conduct and those elected.

Senator Lawan congratulated the 9th senate and National Assembly in general for achieving alot and Mr president by assenting about sixteen bills out of 35 bills been sent to him.

He explained that the National assembly has done so much by helping INEC with required funds which provide the use of mordern technology in the electoral process at this election.

The Senate President assured that the National Assembly with the remaining time would review some of the remaing ninteen bill not been assented by Mr president to be able to move the country forward.

He said it is important to note that out of the sixteen bills been signed by Mr president include the bill to alteration the Constitution for the financial independence of state Assemblies and judiciary, saying this is important for the two arms in the state to work accordingly as stated in the Constitution.

This he said would help in the development of democracy just like what obtained in the Federal government, this would give the judiciary the power to make good judgements.

He assured that the 9th senate within the shortest time will look into those 19th bills not been assented by Mr President so that it may scale through for the development of our processes.

The Senate however received an executive communication for the confirmation of newly appointed members of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation NDIC.

The Senate also sent to the committee on judiciary, human right and legal matters two requests by President Muhammadu Buhari for the confirmation of Mr Anthony Ojukwu SAN for re-appointment as executive secretary of the National Human Right Commission.

It also sent the request for the confirmation of the nomination of Hon Justice Stanly Adekunle Lawal for appointment as substantive president of the customary Court of appeals of the federal Capital Territory to the committee for legislative action.

The committee was given one week to complete his legislative activity on the two appointees and report back to plenary session for confirmation.

Finally, the senate deliberated on three bills for re-committal, this include Federal medical centre Igboho Oyo state establishment, Federal College of education Mutun Biyu inTaraba state and the Chartered Institute of Directors of Nigeria establishment bill 2023 all been passed at the committee of the whole of the senate.
