Customers Queuing Outside a Bank

Sequel to the order by the supreme court, some commercial banks in kano have commenced disbursement of old naira notes to customers.

Radio Nigeria’s correspondent who went round kano metropolis observed that, banks were filled with customers queuing outside.

Most of the banks were locked, with only those on que allowed to enter the bank premises in batches.

At a popular commercial bank in Zaria road, Tarauni Local Government Area, bank security announced to customers that, the bank would only issue old naira notes over the counter, saying that the automated teller machine is faulty.

Some of those fortunate to receive cash explained to Radio Nigeria that they had earlier visited the bank on Monday, but not a single kobo was disbursed.

They noted that, they went back on Tuesday after writing down their names on a sheet of paper, where serial numbers were given for entrance into the banking hall.

They stressed that many were at the bank several times, before succeeding to get cash, after the supreme court’s judgment.

Another Kano resident, Malam Muhammad Abubakar said, several traders have rejected the old one thousand and five hundred naira notes due to fear and uncertainty.

They claimed that, dealers and suppliers may not be willing to give them goods with the old notes.

Meanwhile, people are seen trooping into some specific commercial banks at Sharada, Kano Municipal Local Government Area, which may not be unconnected with availability of the old one thousand and five hundred naira, from the financial institutions.

Radio Nigeria also recalled that, the Supreme Court had on 3rd March 2023, extended the validity of the N200, N500, and N1,000 Naira notes till 31st December.
