Kano Zoological Garden Marks World Wildlife Day With Students, Others

The Managing Director, Kano Zoological Garden and Wildlife Management Agency, Alhaji Lawan Jinjiri has charged Nigerians to collaborate with government, to eradicate illegal hunting and deforestation.

Alhaji Lawan made the call during an event to commemorate World Wildlife Day, held at Kano zoological garden and wildlife management agency.

According to him, March 3rd was set aside by the United Nations as International Wildlife Day, to celebrate world’s wild animals and plants, and their contribution to lives and the health.

He said, deforestation leads to desert encroachment, soil erosion and other environmental hazards.

The Managing Director highlighted that, illegal hunting endangers animal lives, which promotes reduction of species.

Alhaji Lawan Jinjiri maintained that, Kano zoological garden had invited students, academicians, dignitaries and relevant stakeholders, to enlighten them on the importance of wild life to the development of the environment.

He described the theme of this year’s celebration as apt, saying that, it would go a long way in ensuring that international trade does not pose as a threat to the survival of species.

“it also creates awareness through the multitude benefits conservation provides to ecosystem”.

Also speaking, the Deputy Director Wildlife, Kano zoological garden, Hajiya Hafsat Bello Adamu, hinted that, the wild life day is an opportunity to celebrate the various forms of species.

She noted that, there’s the need to step up against human induced reduction of species through collaboration between government , public and relevant stakeholders.

She urged participants to rededicate themselves to enlightening the public, especially children and youths, about the importance of wild life conservation to achieve the desired objectives.

“People around the World benefited daily from the use of wildlife species for food, energy, medicine, materials and recreation”.

The event themed: Partnership for Wildlife Conservation” witnessed large turn out of students from higher institutions of learning across the state, academicians, top government functionaries, and all relevant stakeholders in zoological and botanical sector.
