Emir of Yauri in Kebbi State, Dr. Muhammadu Zayyanu Abdullahi, has called for stringent law to be adopted on illegal fishing in water ways in the area.

The Emir made the appeal when he received the delegation of Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission HYPPADEC led by the Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadik Yalwa, on a courtesy visit in his palace in Yauri.

Dr. Muhammadu Zayyanu Abdullahi said, the law that prohibited illegal fishing along River Niger that passed through his domain was not deterrent enough.

According to him, a defaulter apart from being prosecution, has to pay a fine of fifty thousand naira fine while a big fish cost over one hundred thousand naira.

He said there was likelihood of experiencing decline in the number of fishes in the rivers if illegal fishing continue in the waterways along River Niger.

He commended HYPPADEC for their effort in rehabilitating water treatment plant in Yauri, which will go a long way in easing the suffering of the people in accessing portable water.

Earlier, Head of Monitoring Committee of the governing board of HYPPADEC, Professor Sale Galadima Kanam, said their visit was for the royal father to be aware of the water project to be undertaken by the commission in the area.

He solicited for the support of the royal father to ensure the execution of the project.
