NIMC Introduces NIN Tokenization, Others To Strengthen Security

NIMC KANO REGIONAL COORDINATOR ALHAJI LAWAN YAHAYA

Kano State Regional Coordinator, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Alhaji Lawan Yahaya says the commission has put new modalities in place to uplift NIN registration to international standards.

Alhaji Lawan Yahaya made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria’s Correspondent in Kano.

According to him, the new add-ons include NIN tokenization, NIMC web based services which includes mobile app, third party verification among others.

The regional coordinator however stressed that, NIN tokenization helps protect an individual’s data privacy through the use of an encrypted, coded representation version of the NIN in day to day transactions.

On the issue of data modification, he pointed out that the modification unit under the operations department is saddled with responsibilities of undertaking the task.

Alhaji Lawan highlighted that, updatable modification on name, address, phone number, height can be done in state offices, while non updatable modification, requires data to be sent to NIMC headquarters such as date of birth, gender, next of kin and any other information.

He warned the public to desist from visiting unauthorized persons for data modification as it leads to suspension of NIN number , saying that only NIMC officials are authorized to carry out such operations due to its sensitive nature.

“Anyone willing to change his date of birth would pay a token of #15,000 while other changes are #500”

The regional coordinator said latest data released by NIMC revealed that 90.5 million people are currently enrolled and issued NIN numbers in the country, while Kano state recorded over six million data capture.

He noted that, there were over five enrollment centres in Kano including fifty national identity management offices across the forty four local government areas.

“In the last few years the state government had equipped NIMC enrollment centers with requisite work tools to boost enrollment across all local government area in the state, which has yielded positive results “

Alhaji Lawan Yahaya said, NIMC is working in collaboration with Nigeria Immigration Service and had set up enrollment centres in all passport offices across the nation.

He reaffirmed national identity management commission’s readiness to work assidiously to achieve the desired objectives.
