The public have been advised to maintain environmental sanitation, avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse and building on water ways to avoid flooding.
Deputy director programs, National Orientation Agency Kano office, Alhaji Rabi’u Ado made the call during a sensitization visit to Unguwar gidan Kwari, Sharada Kano municipal local government area.
According to him, they were at the area to enlighten residents on the dangers of flooding and other environmental hazards.
The deputy director described lack of adequate drainage system and dumping of waste in drainages as major catalysts to flooding.
Alhaji Rabi’u Ado maintained that, the national orientation agency Kano office has embarked on sensitization campaign across the forty four local government areas, to educate the public on the importance of adapting to climate change and ways of mitigating environmental hazards among others.
He said, Unguwar gidan Kwari is one of the grey areas experiencing flooding, as such there was the urgent need to enlighten them on how to tackle before, when and after the flood occur.
While attributing the flooding at Kwari market to lack of standard water drainage, Alhaji Rabi’u Ado reiterated NOA’s commitment in visiting markets and public places to sensitize people on how to tackle flooding and other disasters.
“We have visited all the 44 LG’s in the state particularly the most hit Dawakin Kudi,Ajingi and Rogo”.
In their separate remarks, Ward Heads of Unguwar gidan Kwari Sharada and Unguwar gidan Kwari Gandun Albasa, Alhaji Yusuf Ubale and Alhaji Ibrahim Usman appealed to government to come to their aid.
They noted that the area lacks culvert and drainage system, to enable smooth passage of water from Gwale, Mandawari and Gadon Kaya.
The highlighted that, they have officially written to the government several times but yet to receive any feedback.
The ward heads, commended national orientation agency (NOA), Kano office for the visit and urged them to redouble their efforts to achieve the desired objectives.
Radio Nigeria reports that, earlier the director general national orientation agency (NOA),Dr. Garba Abari has called on Nigerians, especially those residing in flood prone areas, to urgently heed the recent warning of the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), about impending flood in some states of the federation, and immediately relocate to safer uplands to avoid loss of lives.
