GEP3 Project Enhances Girl Child Enrollment In Kano

Parents have been advised to send their children to school as education is the backbone of any meaningful society.

The headmaster of Khadijah memorial primary islamiyya, Malam Zakari Sani made the call, while receiving a team of journalists and UNICEF officials, who were at the school to access the level of success, of the girls education project(GEP3), of the Foreign Common Wealth and Development Office (FCDO).

According to him, the girls education project (GEP3) intervention, was received through Kano state QUR’ANIC and Islamiyya Schools Management Board (KSQISMB).

Malam Zakari noted that the islamiyya school had procured uniforms and learning materials which had greatly increased girls enrollment.

Malam Zakari explained that, doors, toilets and drainages were provided to the school using funds from the project, which had gone a long way in improving security within and outside the school.

The headmaster appealed to government and other relevant stakeholders to collaborate,and make adequate provisions for education to achieve the desired objectives.

Also speaking, the chairman of School Based management committee (SBMC), Khadijah memorial primary islamiyya, Alhaji Ibrahim Adamu said, the intervention not only assisted students but had also provided opportunities for capacity building workshops for committee members.

He called for sustainability of the project,which has greatly impacted on the life of parents and students in the area.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand naira was given to the school as intervention”

Some parents who spoke to Radio Nigeria, Alhaji Iliyasu Audi Dambatta and Hajiya Salma Audi, maintained that the program had improved enrollment, retention and completion of education by students as the islamiyya school offers science based subjects, and Islamic religious studies, Qur’anic recitation and memorization among others.

They pointed out that SBMC, had engaged in sensitizing parents and guardians to take their children to schools, and desist from engaging them in street hawking,child labour and other acts capable of exposing under age children to molestation and other criminal acts.

Radio Nigeria reports that, the Girls Education Project (GEP3), pilots a series of intervention programs in primary and selected integrated Qur’anic schools, is implemented by UNICEF and funded by FCDO
