Kano State House of Assembly has called on the state government to assist over 500 farmers affected by flooding in Tudun Wada local government area.
The call followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by a member representing Tudu Wada Local Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Ilyasu Yaryasa, supported by the lawmakers.
Presenting the motion during a plenary presided over by the House Speaker, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari, mover of the motion explained that over 500 farms were washed away by rain and water flow from Tiga Dam last week.
He emphasized the need for federal and state governments to map out strategies with the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Authority on ways to curtail the challenges of flow of water from the Dam, which had affected various local governments within the vicinity.
Also at plenary, Kano state permissible weights Bridges Bill 2021 has scaled the second reading in the floor of the House.
Presenting the Bill, the House Majority Leader, Alhaji Labaran Abdul Madari said if passed into law, the bill would improve effective protection of roads from vehicles conveying heavy goods which often leads to accidents causing a lot of damages on lives and property.
Some of the lawmakers who spoke on the Bill suggested a provision that would mandate heavy duty vehicles to pay a fine for transporting goods that are beyond the standard weight limit.
After the debate, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Housing and Transport for further scrutiny and submit it’s report within four weeks.
In a similar development, the adhoc committee constituted by the House to investigate the alleged killing of one Hasanu Rabi’u by custom officials in febuary this year has submitted it’s report.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after presenting the report, the committee chairman Alhaji Yunusa Haruna Kayyu, said eight recommemdations were provided by the committee which includes giving a time limit to customs service to submit it’s report of investigation on the incidence, preparing legal measure by the State Attorney General towards securing compensation for the victim’s family among others.
The House unanimously adopted the recommemdations pending the outcome of the correspondence between the Kano State House of Assembly and the Nigerian customs service.
