Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state says his administration is working on modalities aim at upgrading the Shehu Shagari College of Education to a full fledged University of Education in the state.

The governor stated this when he received an interim report of a committee setup to look at the capacity of the present college with a view to transforming the college into a university.

Tambuwal said the move was informed by the desire of the state government to promote entrepreneurship skills for socioeconomic development of the state.

He explained that the proposed institution would be saddled with the responsibility of of producing graduates capable of sustaining themselves and employing others in a gainful enterprise operated by them.

The governor assured the committee that the executive arm would look at the recommendations for onward implementation after approval by the Nigerian University Commission.

Presenting the recommendations, the chairman of the committee, Prof. Zayyanu Umar said the committee conducted its assignment with modesty, integrity and sense of responsibility for the course of the education sector in the state.

Pro.Zayyanu said they had recommended some courses to be taught in the proposed institution that would build the capacity of the youth and mitigate the problem of unemployment in the country.

He added that the present college has met most of the NUC requirements.
