Former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has been arrested in the capital, Kampala.

He was leading a team of MPs from his party, the National Unity Platform, in a protest against arrests and disappearances of supporters in the period before and after the keenly contested presidential election in January.

Security forces have fired tear gas to disperse the crowd that was marching with the politician who had in an earlier virtual address on Sunday urged his supporters to use peaceful means to protest against the election results and to demand the status of their missing colleagues.

Local media reported that authorities accused Bobi Wine of attempting to demolish President Yoweri Museveni’s government through leading violent protests.
