Election: IGP Orders Activation Of Inter-agency Security Committees Nationwide

The Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba has ordered Commissioners of Police-CP nationwide to activate the Inter-Agency Consultative Committees on Election Security.

This was contained in a statement on Sunday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

According to Inspector General of Police, the order was to engage stakeholders in evolving strategies to mitigate threats to the 2023 General Elections.

He said the political violence, hate speech, threats, political intolerance, misinformation and political extremism were potential threats to democracy and national security.

Usman Baba based on the highlighted potential threats, therefore directed the CP to work in synergy with all  members of the committee to address the threats and ensure swift prosecution of violators of extant electoral laws.

He enjoined the Commissioners to ensure adequate and strategic deployment of officers and assets, as well as coordinate and supervise officers from all security agencies deployed for election duties.

The IGP noted that the action was necessary to fortify all facilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission-INEC, including election materials, safety and security of INEC personnel before, during and after the general elections.

Also, the IGP has ordered fresh distribution of gadgets, anti-riot gear, and personal protective equipment to policemen nationwide in preparation for the elections.

Usman Baba reaffirmed the commitment of the Police to the protection of democratic heritage and national security.

The IGP however urged all members of the election security committee and the general public to aid in ensuring the safety and security of election materials, personnel and voters.
