Workers Day: Organised Labour Calls For Better Welfare Package In Borno

Written by Bunmi Abdulraheem

Organised Labour has called on Borno state government to lift the temporary embargo on the promotion of civil servants.

The State Chairman Trade Union Congress, Comrade Babayo Hamma made the call at an event to mark the 2022 Workers Day in Maiduguri.

Comrade Hamma noted that the temporary suspension was to last for a period of one year, but now in its third year.

He identified non payment of promotion benefit and annual increment, payment of gratuity to local government staff and payment of 2020 leave grants as some of demands of the workers.

“It is a known fact that for some years now, workers in Borno are not enjoying promotion benefit, worrisome are those retiring and their benefit been computed on their present salary level despite the fact they are genuinely promoted some with two or three promotion letters ” Comrade Hamma lamented.

Responding, Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum assured that all outstanding entitlements of workers are fully paid within the available resources.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Professor Isa Hussaini, the Governor said his administration in 2021 secured twelve billion naira loan for the settlement of backlog of gratuities to state and local government pensioners.

“Many of our retirees have recieved their benefits, backlogs of Leave Transport Grants of 2018, 2019, and 2021 ha e been settled” Zulum said.

The Governor called on workers in the state to reciprocate the gesture by rededicating themselves to better services, urging the public and private sectors to contribute in the recovery effort of Borno after more than ten years of insurgency.
