Army Seeks NEDC Support In Management Of Repentant Insurgents

The Theatre Command, Operation Hadin Kai has requested the intervention of the Northeast Development Commission-NEDC in management of repentant Boko Haram insurgents. 

Theatre Commander Joint Taskforce Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Christopher Musa made the request during a visit to headquarters of the Commission in Maiduguri.

Major General Musa said more than seventeen thousand surrendered Boko Haram fighters and their families are now in the custody of Nigeria’s military forces.

He therefore solicited the intervention of NEDC to constitute an inter-ministerial committee to manage the high number of those surrendered in areas of feeding and other humanitarian needs and also device proactive ways of stopping plans by ISWAP to recruit the surrendered insurgents. 

Responding, Managing Director, North East Development Commission, Dr Mohammed Alkali acknowledged that the number of those surrendered is a humanitarian situation, assuring to provide feeding and health care after profiling the combatants. 

The Commission then donated two hundred and thirty bullet proof jackets and same number of helmets to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp Agro rangers squad as protective gear for personnel protecting farmers against attacks.

Meanwhile, The Commission says one thousand five hundred teachers from the six states in the North East region would be trained to improve teaching and learning. 
 
Already, the first batch of three hundred teachers from Borno State have undergo five day training on classroom instruction skills, safety and trauma counselling as a means of closing the gaps of education standards.
