The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kaduna State Chapter, has called on the Kaduna State Police Command to protect the rights, dignity and personal safety of Farida Isiak, a journalist with Nagarta Radio, Kaduna.
In a press statement jointly signed by its Chairperson, Sahura Jibril Maidoki, and Secretary, Dr. Hadiza Bello Abdullahi Kubau, dated October 23, 2026, the association urged the police to handle the matter with fairness, professionalism and strict adherence to the rule of law.
NAWOJ acknowledged the statement issued by the Police Command on the circumstances surrounding the case, including its reported efforts to resolve the matter amicably.
The association, however, stressed that any allegations of misconduct should be addressed through lawful, transparent and proportionate procedures that respect the fundamental rights of all parties.
It maintained that harassment, intimidation and victimisation of women journalists must not be tolerated, emphasising that journalists should be able to perform their duties and express their views without fear of reprisal.
NAWOJ noted that while freedom of expression comes with responsibilities, the police have a duty to protect the rights of every citizen, including constitutionally guaranteed liberties.
The association also called on all parties to exercise restraint and allow the matter to be resolved through due process, urging stronger dialogue and mutual respect between law enforcement agencies and media professionals.
It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the safety, welfare and professional independence of women journalists, while fostering constructive relations between the police and the media.
NAWOJ said dialogue, accountability and lawful mechanisms should take precedence in resolving disagreements between journalists and law enforcement officers to sustain public confidence in both institutions.
