Kano State House of Assembly Committee on Higher Education has pledged to ensure a conducive learning environment for staff and students of the School of Continuing Education, Northwest University Kano.
The Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Ali Lawan , made the pledge when the committee visited the institution located within the Murtala Muhammad Library complex in Kano.
Ali described the condition of the institute as unfortunate and an embarrassment, considering the state government’s commitment to the education sector, which he said has received more than thirty percent of the state budget.
The lawmaker, who represents Bagwai/Shanono Constituency, said combining academic activities with political gatherings and other social activities within the library premises was inappropriate.
He noted that the committee would file a comprehensive report to the assembly to urgently intervene and find a lasting solution to the challenges facing the institution.
The Director of the Institute, Dr. Lawan Idris, commended the committee for responding to the situation and appealed for the state library facility to be allocated for academic purposes, particularly for the establishment of a university institute.
Dr. Idris identified inadequate office space, lack of domestic water supply, political gatherings and other non-academic activities as some of the challenges affecting the institution.
He assured that Northwest University Kano remains committed to providing quality education and moral training to its students.
The Director explained that the School of Continuing Education is a branch of Northwest University Kano established to provide opportunities for students to qualify for university admission and pursue degree programmes.
Radio Nigeria reports that during the visit,the committee chairman alongside the secretary, Muhammad Lawan were taken round the library.
