Islamic Cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, has distanced himself from reports and materials allegedly linking him to support for banditry in Nigeria.

In a statement issued in Kaduna, Sheikh Gumi says he had observed persistent misrepresentation of his comments in media interviews, public lectures, and discussions on insecurity in the country.

He alleged that certain ethnic-interest groups, prejudiced individuals, and some online content creators were circulating manipulated materials and sensational headlines aimed at attracting public attention at the expense of national peace and human suffering.

The cleric stated unequivocally that any video clip, written statement, or message attributed to him, either directly or indirectly, suggesting support for, justification of, or advocacy for banditry did not originate from him.

Sheikh Gumi reaffirmed his loyalty to Nigeria, describing the country as a nation with immense potential.

He called on the public, media organisations, and government authorities to disregard what he described as fake, manipulated, and doctored materials currently in circulation.

The cleric further warned that anyone who continues to spread false information against him from the date of the statement would face legal action.

Sheikh Gumi also expressed hope for lasting peace in the country, while praying for comfort for victims affected by insecurity.

He stressed the need for collective efforts by Nigerians and the international community to address the root causes of violence, including ignorance, poverty, and social injustice.
