The Kano State Government has intensified efforts to prevent lead poisoning by hosting a high-level stakeholder engagement aimed at strengthening public health response and environmental safety across the state.
The meeting took place at the Emergency Operations Centre in Kano and brought together key health stakeholders and development partners working on lead exposure prevention.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, received a delegation from Project Amplify Lead Poisoning Prevention in Nigeria, a joint initiative between Nigerian Health Watch and Resolve to Save Lives.
Discussions at the engagement centered on scaling up existing interventions in Kano State, improving public awareness campaigns, and strengthening the health system’s capacity to respond to cases of lead exposure, particularly among children and vulnerable families.
Stakeholders also reviewed strategies for expanding community-level education on environmental health risks and improving early detection and response mechanisms.
Dr. Yusuf emphasized that under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano State is prioritizing stronger inter-agency collaboration and partnerships with development organizations to address environmental health challenges.
He noted that lead poisoning prevention remains a critical public health concern requiring sustained attention, coordinated planning, and community participation.
Partners at the meeting also stressed the need for continuous collaboration between government institutions, health organizations, and community actors to ensure long-term impact in reducing lead poisoning risks.
