President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved key leadership changes in Nigeria’s petroleum regulatory space, nominating a new Chief Executive for the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority-NMDPRA as part of efforts to strengthen oversight and efficiency in the sector.

The President approved the removal of the outgoing Authority Chief Executive, Mr. Saidu Mohammed, citing public interest, and subsequently nominated Mr. Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as his replacement.

The nomination is subject to confirmation by the National Assembly.

The decision, taken in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, is aimed at improving regulatory effectiveness across Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum operations, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Mr. Umar brings over 25 years of experience spanning the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors.

He is widely regarded for his expertise in strategic leadership, operational transformation, and execution of large-scale projects.

An alumnus of Bayero University Kano and Harvard Business School, Umar is expected to provide strong leadership that will enhance sector performance, boost investor confidence, and support Nigeria’s energy security goals.

Pending Senate confirmation, the most senior official within the Authority will oversee operations in an acting capacity to ensure continuity.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing Chief Executive for his service, wishing him success in his future endeavours.

The development underscores the administration’s commitment to appointing competent leadership across critical institutions to drive reforms, improve governance, and sustain economic growth in the energy sector.
