The Senate has urged the Armed Forces of Nigeria to strengthen adherence to rules of engagement and international humanitarian law in ongoing military operations.

It also called for improved training on civilian protection, thorough investigation of any allegations of civilian harm during operations, and measures to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno and co-sponsored by Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume and Kaka Shehu Lawan on the urgent need to curb attacks on military formations by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.

Presenting the motion on Wednesday, Senator Monguno expressed deep concern over recent attacks on military formations that led to casualties among troops, including Brig. Gen. Oseni Braimoh, Col. Mohammed Isya, Capt. A.M. Esmat, Lt. Kelvin Festus, and 13 others.

The Senate Chief Whip noted that the recurring attacks in Monguno and Beni Sheik indicate a deliberate attempt by insurgents to undermine military operations and disrupt humanitarian and commercial access routes in the state.

The Senate also called on the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs to conduct a comprehensive operational and logistical audit of the attacks in Monguno and Beni Sheik, including an assessment of equipment adequacy and rules of engagement, while addressing identified gaps.

It further urged communities to support the military with timely intelligence on insurgent activities, while strongly condemning continued Boko Haram attacks on military formations in Borno communities.

The Senate commended officers and men of Operation Hadin Kai for their gallantry and urged the Federal Government to prioritize their welfare, equipment, and combat readiness.
