Energy drinks, popularly known as energizers, are increasingly gaining popularity across Nigeria, with Kano State recording a significant rise in consumption.
In recent times, more companies have ventured into the production of energy drinks due to their growing demand in the country.
Youths, adults, and even women consume the beverages in large quantities, regardless of their occupation or lifestyle, often without considering the possible health implications.
Despite their widespread popularity, health experts warn that excessive consumption of energy drinks poses serious health risks.
In Kano, the products are readily available in shops, retail outlets, and traffic junctions, where street hawkers and shop owners record high patronage daily.
Grassroots Nigeria sampled the opinions of some Kano residents, many of whom said they consume energy drinks to boost energy levels, stay awake for long hours, or enhance physical performance during work and daily activities.
Speaking on the health hazards associated with energy drinks, a consultant at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Dr. Musa Muhammad Bello, cautioned against excessive intake.
Dr. Bello explained that consuming energy drinks in large quantities can lead to serious medical conditions.
According to him, excessive consumption may result in hypertension, liver damage, and kidney-related diseases, among other health complications.
He advised the public to moderate their intake and seek healthier alternatives for boosting energy.
Health experts continue to call for increased public awareness on the dangers of indiscriminate consumption of energy drinks, especially among young people.
