Children in Kano have urged government to prioritize inclusive education, access to quality healthcare for PWDs, safe and conducive learning environment as well as provision of water sanitation and hygiene WASH facilities.

This was part of recommendations by the children during a panel discussion to commemorate world children’s day organized by Kano Radio Corporation in collaboration with UNICEF, Kano field office.

Other recommendations include gender equality, ending trafficking and cyber violence, awareness creation on community protection of dignity on social media, among others.

The children commended the Kano state government for its giant strides in education including removing barriers to education, recruitment of teachers and security across schools, provision of learning and teaching materials among others.

In a panel discussion titled the role of government in ensuring the well being of children in Kano state, the Chief of Field Office UNICEF Kano , Mr Rahma Rihood Mohammed Farah noted that UNICEF has done a lot to ensure that fundamental rights of children are protected.

He maintained that other interventions include providing technical and financial support, as well as collaborating with civil society organizations to achieve the desired objectives.

Mr Rahma said UNICEF in collaboration with the state government has facilitated the integration of Qur’anic schools into the proper education system which has led to a reduction in out of school children.

Also speaking, the Director Research and Statistics , Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Disabled, Alhaji Zubair Abdulmumin Zubair highlighted the empowerment of 400 sexual gender based violence survivors, psychological support, and training of community based structures on child protection.

Representative of the media, Mr. Kola Oyelere of Nigerian Tribute highlighted efforts by the media in Kano that has improved the well being of children.
